A lot of people find relief after using cannabis. However, can we be sure that it is secure?
900 adults in the United States were polled by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal and asked, “If you had to choose only one, which of these four substances — alcohol, marijuana, sugar, or cigarettes — would you think is most harmful?”
What people said in answer to the question:
- 41% chose to use tobacco.
- 24%chose to drink.
- 21% chose sugar
- 9% of people chose marijuana.
- 9% of people chose marijuana.
The NBC News poll isn’t the only one that shows how Americans feel about marijuana is changing. In April, CBS News Polls also compared marijuana to other narcotics in a similar survey.
Here’s what their poll showed:
- 66% of Americans say that marijuana is safer than most other drugs.
- 51% of Americans think that alcohol is worse for your health than marijuana.
- 6% of Americans say that marijuana is more dangerous.
The way Americans think about cannabis is in line with the growing research on how safe and useful it is. So how does cannabis stack up against the other potentially dangerous chemicals that Americans regularly consume?
Here is the annual death toll in the United States attributable to various substances:
- Cigarette Smoking: 480,000
- Obesity: 300,000
- Deaths due to alcohol: 88,000
- Secondhand Smoke Exposure: 41,000
- Cannabis: 0
Impressive, no doubt. Still, these numbers don’t show everything. When you use tobacco, drink alcohol, or eat too much sugar, you can get sick in many ways. It’s hard to say how many cancer or heart disease cases there are because of these three things. Cancer and heart disease are the main causes of death in the U.S. Between them, they kill 46% of Americans each year.
Even though tobacco, alcohol, and sugar are linked to many health problems, people still use them. It’s strange that you can buy tobacco and alcohol at the nearest gas station and that sugar in addition to many of the foods we eat. And yet, cannabis is still seen as a drug that is against the law and has no medical value.
And this isn’t true at all.
What does marijuana do?
The endocannabinoid system in our bodies is set up to work with cannabis (ECS). The ECS is a complex system of molecules and receptors, including CB1 and CB2. Endocannabinoids are cannabinoids that the body makes, and phytocannabinoids are cannabinoids that come from plants. CB1 and CB2 receptors interact with endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids to control many bodily functions, such as appetite, blood pressure, inflammation, memory, mood, pain sensation, and sleep. The two most common phytocannabinoids in cannabis are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
Phytocannabinoids are only found in one plant, which is cannabis. To put it another way, cannabis is the only thing that can help us when our ECS is out of whack.
But doesn’t cannabis get you high?
Research shows that people who use cannabis are not as likely to get hooked on it as people who use tobacco, alcohol, or sugar. Cannabis has never been linked to an overdose death, and in some cases, it has been used to help people with chronic pain use less opioids. In a pilot study done in New Mexico, people with chronic pain who joined the medical cannabis program used less opioids or stopped using them altogether.
The way people in the United States think about cannabis is changing, and scientists are just starting to find out how it can help our health and well-being.
